CONCURS LITERARI LLENGUA ANGLESA SANT JORDI 2022

That special summer day by Judith Calduch

I first met him when I was nineteen years old. As soon as I saw him I knew we would be good friends, but what I didn’t expect was that he was going to be such an important and unforgettable person in my life.
It was a usual summer day in Palamòs, a small village where I used to live. I have loved summer for many years since I enjoy hot and relaxed days. However, that week I was really bored as there was nobody in the village to spend time doing anything better than sleep and stay at home with the mobile phone. That day I decided to do something different and I did a kind of excursion for Costa Brava. I think I have never done this type of thing before, but there’s always a first time and I wanted to experience new adventures. So I prepared some sandwiches and started to walk without any destination.
At first, I went to some coves as “Cala Estreta”, but then I discovered new and beautiful ones that I actually didn’t know about. It was in one of them where I first saw him. He was reading a book on a big rock while the sea water brushed his legs. All of him transmitted me peace and tranquility. Suddenly, he turned and looked at me for a short time and then continued with his reading. We were the only ones there, only accompanied by the noise of the waves and birds. I don’t know why but I decided to go with him and just watch the sea and the blue sky. We were in silence, but a beautiful one.

-Which book are you reading? It seems interesting- I dared to ask him. He turned, looked at me again with his intense blue eyes and smiled. It was a simple but perfect smile that made me nervous. We started talking about the book, he told me it was his favorite one and that he had read it almost six times. And then we talked about many things. He was kind and confident and the way he talked really caught my attention. I couldn’t take my eyes off him, there was something about him that attracted me a lot.

I didn’t ask much about his private life, but I knew some things about him. He was from Barcelona and was one year older than me. He loves the sea and, in general, nature. I don’t know how, we talked more and more and started to laugh about some anecdotes. We connected from the first moment. We were both really similar to each other.

It was in one moment, that our hands brushed just a little and something removed from my body since that was so electrifying. I think we both realized that we had chemistry and a special relationship. But It was too late and the sky was getting darker. So he told me that he had to come back home. I was sad, I wanted to spend more time there just with him talking about anything. When he finally left I realized I didn’t have his phone number and also didn’t know his name. How was that possible? I was about to cry when I suddenly saw his book. I want to believe that he left it expressly for me, but I’m not sure about that.

I came up quickly and took the book. I opened it excited and then I saw that there was a Bookmarker with his name and his phone number. I started to cry, probably because of the emotion. No sooner had I read it than I opened my mobile phone and texted him, Jack…
